What we choose to eat has a significant environmental impact - if it has travelled half way across the world, if it is sold in plastic containers, if it is heavily processed. In addition it's estimated that food accounts for approximately 15% of goods transported on Britain's roads. You can make positive choices to reduce the environmental impact of your food.

Support our local Super Market in the corner of the Market Square; it can provide for your every need, with a fishmonger, cheese and game counter, baker, greengrocer, delicatessen, wholefood supplier, butcher – what more could you want! Try to carry your own shopping bags with you. Durham has its own campaign to rid the City of plastic bags. Look for the sign in retailers windows and say ‘no’ to plastic. Finally, grow your own, either in your garden, or by renting an allotment.
