JOINING A CLIMATE DURHAM ACTION GROUP

Climate Durham believes that by working in community, we will encourage and enable change. Individual changes need to be recognised – which is why we encourage you to let us know [hyperlink to posts] about them. Similarly, work in organisations, schools and business need recognition and we are encouraging that to happen too.

In order to make Climate Durham attractive to the widest possible range of local people, it is being organised in such a way that enables their vision, knowledge and skills to be used in making Durham more resilient to climate change. For a manageable process to develop, the key challenges and opportunities have been divided between five Action Groups. Each will start by preparing its own vision and then create projects such as those shown (some indicated as ‘already in preparation (A)’, some as ‘suggested projects (B)’ and ‘possible campaigns (C)’)

ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

In Durham, there is already considerable awareness and activity for improving energy efficiency in the home through ‘GoWarm’. The Action Group plans to work on other areas of concern such as:

School energy monitoring (‘Trickle Down’) (A)

BUSINESS & CLIMATE CHANGE

The development of resilience within the local economy to the effects of climate change is a major challenge. The Group will also look to promote action to achieve greater resilience against extreme weather events and preparations to adapt to storms, flooding and drought arising from changing weather patterns.

Energy efficiency in business – consultancy offer on energy efficiency (A)

TRANSPORT & CLIMATE CHANGE

With transport accounting for 30% of emissions and growing, travelling less and with less impact may become the norm. The Group will need to set an agenda that focuses on practical action to meet national and local targets to reduce the contribution transport makes to total emissions in Durham.

Neighbourhood car sharing schemes (A)

  • Cycle and Walk Durham (A)
  • Business car-share schemes (A)
  • Regular Green Travel Days, on first Thursday of each month (A
  • Campaign to decarbonise travel – influencing behaviour and stimulating action (C)  I am interested in this Group

NATURE & CLIMATE CHANGE

Creating awareness and identifying opportunities for community action to protect wildlife and extend habitats in both urban and rural areas is required.

School wildlife project (‘Making room for nature before it says goodbye’) (A)

CONSUMERS, WASTE & CLIMATE CHANGE

The success of the Durham shopping bag reduction scheme shows that other initiatives to promote local products and reduce waste including packaging waste might be equally effective.

School fashion industry project (‘Fashion – is it out of date?) (A)

  • School food project – (‘Food and carbon emissions’) (A)
  • School waste project – (‘No such thing as waste’) (A)
  • Local food promotion campaign (A)
  • Waste packaging reduction campaign (B)   I am interested in this Group
